Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse. XR Wingecarribee was formed in late 2019 to join this international movement for change.
A Brief History
After horrific ‘Black Summer‘ fire storms in 2019/2020 that devastated Southern Highland villages, XR Wingecarribee (Southern Highlands) wanted to send an important message to our local, state and federal governments to lift their game on climate action to ensure a safe and sustainable future for all.
The first action was to encourage our conservative council to “Declare A Climate Emergency” in their next general meeting. Local politicians needed to “tell the truth” and get on with the necessary changes to avoid mass species extinction and societal collapse.
The rally held in February 2020 had a fantastic turn out on a 40 degrees day which was filmed by one of our XR Rebels.
Our local XR group was represented en masse for the Wingecarribee Shire Council general meeting. The motion to “Declare A Climate Emergency” resulted in a celebration when moved! Again, this was captured by one of our XR Rebels.
Shortly after this win, XR was invited to attend a meeting of the Wingecarribee Shire Council Environment & Sustainability Committee. It was an interesting and ultimately successful meeting the result of which was the passing of a resolution that XR make a presentation to Council and that a panel of experts be appointed to advise Council on climate change measures. The resolution of the Environment Committee has now been adopted by Council, and it calls for Council to prepare a Climate Emergency Action Plan, which is now underway.
XR brought together local community groups and stake holders to form WinZero (Wingecarribee zero emissions). This panel of experts now operates independently for the purpose of research, preparing the presentation for Council and practically working towards a sustainable environment and zero emissions in the shire .
XR Wingecarribee will continue to remind WSC to act on its Climate Emergency declaration and on the recommendations provided by WinZero.
Who We Are
We are you! You are welcome to join us and participate, you don’t need our permission, as long as you agree to follow the core principles and values of Extinction Rebellion.
1. TELL THE TRUTH
Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
2. ACT NOW
Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
3. BEYOND POLITICS
Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
Principles and Values
1. WE HAVE A SHARED VISION OF CHANGE
Creating a world that is fit for generations to come.
2. WE SET OUR MISSION ON WHAT IS NECESSARY
Mobilising 3.5% of the population to achieve system change – using ideas such as momentum-driven organising to achieve this.
3. WE NEED A REGENERATIVE CULTURE
Creating a culture which is healthy, resilient and adaptable.
4. WE OPENLY CHALLENGE OURSELVES AND THIS TOXIC SYSTEM
Leaving our comfort zones to act for change.
5. WE VALUE REFLECTING AND LEARNING
Following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contacts as well as our own experiences.
6. WE WELCOME EVERYONE AND EVERY PART OF EVERYONE
Working actively to create safer and more accessible space.
7. WE ACTIVELY MITIGATE FOR POWER
Breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation.
8. WE AVOID BLAMING AND SHAMING
We live in a toxic system, but no one individual is to blame.
9. WE ARE A NON-VIOLENT NETWORK
Using non-violent strategy and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change.
10. WE ARE BASED ON AUTONOMY AND DECENTRALISATION
We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of Extinction Rebellion!
Fight For Life
We are in the middle of an Ecological crisis. Our course is set for mass species extinction, and societal collapse. Our future looks bleak and our children are not safe. Change to avert the worst of the disaster is still technically and economically possible. It involves envisioning and building a world which is ecologically and socially just.
This is an emergency situation – action is urgent.
Our Government isn’t acting in accordance with what science and history tells us. Therefore our Government is criminally negligent. We have a moral duty to rebel, whatever our politics. History shows us that peaceful civil disobedience is an effective way to bring about change. Our lives have meaning when we follow our conscience and fight to protect what we love. We ask others who feel the same way to join our peaceful Rebellion.
